Can I apply for postgraduate studies at RUDN University if I graduated from a different university?

Yes, you can submit your application and enroll in postgraduate studies at RUDN University.

Can I apply for a government-funded (budget) PhD program?

Foreign citizens may apply for government-funded postgraduate studies if they register on the Education in Russia website (https://education-in-russia.com/ ) and are granted a quota by the Government of the Russian Federation.

Can a foreign citizen apply for postgraduate studies on equal terms with Russian citizens?

This opportunity is available only to citizens of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

Are foreign citizens required to take entrance exams if applying through the Government of Russia quota (via an Embassy or Rossotrudnichestvo representative office abroad)?

Foreign citizens and stateless persons applying under the Russian Government quota are not required to take entrance exams at RUDN University.

Is part-time postgraduate study available?

No, RUDN University does not currently offer part-time postgraduate programs. However, applicants may consider affiliation for the purpose of preparing and defending a dissertation.

Can a foreign citizen apply for postgraduate studies without leaving the Russian Federation after completing a master’s degree?

Yes, provided that the admission order is issued no later than one month before the expiration of the current student visa.

How can I apply for a contract-based PhD program at RUDN University? Where should I send my documents?

Required application documents can be submitted by foreign citizens either via email at phd@rudn.ru  or in person at the following address:

When can I apply for a contract-based PhD program at RUDN University?

Document submission for foreign applicants begins on April 1, 2025, and on November 25, 2025.

Are there entrance exams for postgraduate studies at RUDN University? What kind?

The competitive selection process for foreign citizens applying for contract-based postgraduate programs is conducted through a portfolio review. More details are available on the university website, under the Postgraduate Studies section.

What is the tuition fee for postgraduate studies?

To find tuition fees, go to the university website and use the educational program filter. Select the desired program at the “Postgraduate Studies” level. There, you will find key information, including the annual tuition fee and any applicable discounts.

Can I be affiliated as an external doctoral candidate? What are the requirements?

Yes, you may apply for affiliation either to take Candidate of Sciences exams or to prepare and defend a dissertation. Required documents:

  • Copy of your passport;
  • Notarized translation of your passport into Russian (if you are a foreign citizen);
  • Copies of higher education diplomas with transcripts (and notarized translations if the originals are not in Russian);
  • Application form (link available on the website), signed by the heads of the departments where you intend to take exams
  • Completed questionnaire with photo (link on the website);
  • Consent to personal data processing (link on the website).

Does RUDN University issue invitations for family members of postgraduate students?

No. Issuing invitations to family members of enrolled students is a right, not an obligation, of the university.

Can a postgraduate student stay abroad during their studies, for example, to collect research materials?

Yes, postgraduate students may travel abroad for research purposes with approval from their academic department.

What document will I receive after completing my postgraduate studies? Will it specify my field of study?

Upon successful completion of the final assessment, graduates receive a Certificate of Completion of Postgraduate Studies, which includes the academic specialization in which the dissertation was prepared.

How is a research supervisor assigned?

A research supervisor is appointed by the head of the relevant department based on the student’s research interests. If the research topic changes, the student has the right to request a new supervisor.

Can I take an academic leave during my postgraduate studies? Do I have to leave Russia during the leave?

Yes, academic leave is permitted during postgraduate studies. However, university accommodation is not provided during the leave period.
